What is an Antique?

I’ve always been attracted to the “Field Guide” for more information on a topic.  I relate to the photographs, the glossy pages and the systematic analysis, the illustrated glossary and the encyclopedic knowledge that covers just about everything. 

From Wipeka- An antique (Latin: antiquus; “old”, "ancient") is a collectable item, at least 100 years old. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society.

It is common practice to define "antique" as applying to objects at least 100 years old.[1]

Antiques are usually objects that show some degree of craftsmanship—or a certain attention to design, such as a desk or an early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, estate sales, auction houses, online auctions, and other venues, or estate inherited. Antique dealers often belong to national trade associations, many of which belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 21 countries that represents 5,000 dealers.

Until about 1870, the word “antique” was used to describe things pertaining to ancient 

Greece and Rome - what we now call antiquities - while what we term antiques were known then as curios or curiosities. 

 From then until about 1980, an antique came to mean any artifact over 100 years old.  OMG-1917-

Vintage is termed at 50 year old.

My personal eclectics allows me to borrow ideas from all kinds of sources, mixing together pieces from many places and different periods.  We can’t forget about all the hi-tech equipment of the present day and make room for that.

Caring for your Antiques

Maintain a temperate climate in you home, ensuring consistency for day to night and from season to season.
